Good supervisors have good leadership skills. In this course, we explore the differences and similarities between leader and supervisors. We examine the theory of leadership and how this can be applied in the workplace and specifically the public sector environment. Leadership and supervision is linked to motivating and building a team using practical workplace based skills development principles and tools. The broader purpose of the course is to develop leadership skills that will motivate and inspire teams.

Upon completing this course, you should be able to:

Identify and explain various definitions of leadership with examples

Explain the roles and qualities of a leader using examples

Differentiate the concepts of leadership and management using examples

Explain the circumstances when a team leader manages and leads with examples from the work context

Identify various theories of leadership according to theory and practice

Diagnose the leadership approach of the team according to individual needs and organisational requirements

Implement leadership techniques in order to improve group dynamics and achieve objectives

Measure the impact of leadership techniques against organisational requirements

Evaluate the effectiveness of the techniques against theory and practice

Take corrective actions, where appropriate, to improve the effectiveness of the individual or team

Explain the reasons why motivation is important with examples

Identify indicators of motivation, according to theory and practice

Identify own strengths and areas for development, based on self-reflection and feedback

Identify strengths and areas of development of team based on observation and feedback

Compare and contrast two theories of motivation with examples

Identify elements of group dynamics according to theory and practice

Compile an action plan to strengthen the team according to Standard Operating Procedures

Obtain commitment from the team to achieve the action plan

Execute implementation according to the action plan

Monitor the implementation of the plan and amend it accordingly

Observe group dynamics and reflect on it according to theory and practice

Provide feedback to each member of the team according to observation

Give recognition to team members who have contributed to the development of the team


This course is accredited by the Services Sector Education and Training Authority (Services SETA). On completion, the following certification will be awarded:

A Services SETA Statement of Results will be awarded to all delegates who successfully the unit standards’ portfolio requirements. The Statement of Results will only reflect the unit standards successfully completed; or

A Regenesys Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to all delegates who attended all training sessions, but who do not complete any portfolio requirements successfully.
