Report Writing Skills

In the world of work decision-making is very important. Managers need access to information that is: concise and clearly presented; easy and quick to interpret; and useful to accurately assess situations and making decisions. Reports communicate information which has been compiled as a result of analysis of data and of issues. Reports can cover a wide range of topics, but usually focus on transmitting information with a clear purpose, to a specific audience. Good reports are documents that are accurate, objective and complete. Reports should also be well written, clearly structured and expressed in a way that holds the reader’s attention and meets their expectations.

Exit Level Outcomes

Upon completing this course, you should be able to:

Identify and respond to textual features specific to written texts;

Recognise or recall ideas and information that are explicitly stated in a written text;

Re-organise information from a written text;

Infer information from a written business text;

Evaluate information in a written text used in the business sector;

Relate the purpose, content, form, frequency and recipients of a range of reports to the information needs of a selected business;

Identify information sources and organisational procedures for obtaining and distributing information relevant to a selected business function;

Compile reports related to a selected function, ensuring content and format are appropriate to information requirements and that reporting deadlines are met; and

Liaise with relevant parties and verifying that reported information is in accordance with requirements and purpose of the report.


This course is accredited by the Services Sector Education and Training Authority (Services SETA). On completion, the following certification will be awarded:

A Services SETA Statement of Results will be awarded to all delegates who successfully the unit standards’ portfolio requirements. The Statement of Results will only reflect the unit standards successfully completed; or

A Regenesys Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to all delegates who attended all training sessions, but who do not complete any portfolio requirements successfully.
